Large buttons on the remote

I have in laws who are 100 and 94 years old.   The buttons on the Uverse remote are very difficult for them to see, and also to navigate.  They just want to watch TV, and mostly news shows.  I called AT&T and they said they only have 3 remotes and none of them had larger buttons.  They also said there wasn't anything they were going to do to address this issue in the near future, which is very discouraging.  So I am reaching out to see if anyone else has encountered this issue of needing a different remote or some solution that would help my aging inlaws be able to enjoy their TV.  I am willing to look at other cable providers, but wanted to start here.

Uverse is dying a slow death so don't expect any kind of changes, options or upgrades to service or hardware.

You'll need to look at third party remotes.  Someone posted earlier that they had found one but did not specify the brand.

Yes. Very disappointing the way this was handled. I will try to find a 3rd party and then look to see if other providers have that option

Hi there @johnnyh6 , We are sorry to hear about your experience with getting a remote for your in-laws.

As @skeeterintexas mentioned at this time the best option for a remote would be to purchase a 3rd party or universal remote.

If you have any other questions or concerns just reach back out to us and we'll be happy to help.

Thank you for contacting us on the Community Forums.

Megan, can you let me know what 3rd party remote would work for Uverse, rather than having to go track down remotes and figure out if they work.  I would hope your technicians would have some options for people who are struggling to use the remote provided.

Hello, @johnnyh6!

You can try a universal remote as they are compatible with a lot of different devices.

We do not have a list of all 3rd party remotes that are compatible with our services.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

The problem is most 3rd party remotes are pretty unintuitive to use for anything other then basic functions (on/off, volume up/down, channel up/down).

AT&T uses nonstandard /ridiculous menus.  (for instance why is closed captions menu actually now the options menu to control 5 different things, and accessed via CC button and options button on s30 remote, but C button turns off Closed captions with 1 click, makes zero sense)

Once you get past those basic functions even if you can train the remote control to do the functions of the att remote it's often not the button you'd expect it to be so training due to non-standard configuration.

and if you go with a digital /fancy universal like a harmony (which is being discontinued)  you get stuck having to spend an absurd amount of time programing it, and if anything at all changes in your setup it'll no longer work correctly.

Caleb from AT&T,

Please read what I have written in previous posts.  We are looking for large button remotes for my in laws.  What you have suggested is compatible universal remotes, none of which are large button.  I am dumbfounded that AT&T cannot find/supply a large button remote for older people who just want to be able to watch TV!  Very disappointed.

I'm a customer like you I don't work for att.

There are 3rd party universal remotes with big buttons but they most likely won't be able to handle most of the non basic functions easily(dvr as I explained.

Att is never going to introduce a uverse remote with big buttons, although the s30 remote is very slightly better than s10 and s20 (or god forbid the ancient silver ones) if you still have old ones.  They have been trying to kill uverse tv for years.  They stopped purchasing/manufacturing new equipment in 2017,  and only give customers poorly refurbished equipment.   Remotes used to be always new, but I just received a refurbished one so even those aren't safe anymorw.

Att could care less about the elderly or disabled. Have you tried their closed captions half the time they are missing or unintelligible in violation of federal law. and often cover the actors faces to make show unwatchable.

I would try searching amazon and maybe you'll get lucky and find something that is learning compatible with uverse.

Dear AT&T.  Is this still available?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWskrwJxQ2c

That was something they tried ages ago that didn't work.

Unless your parents are extremely comfortable using touch screen phones I'd avoid any phone or tablet based app solutions as they are pretty tricky if your dexterity isn't great.

Comcast xfinity x1 voice remotes actually work pretty well if your main goal is just to change channels and stuff.  If comcast is available in their area.

Fire tv has alexa if you don't need that many channels and don't mind less channels using YouTube TV or att tv or one of the other OTTP (over the top providers via internet).  But alexa is hit and miss with different apps for voice control.

Hello, @johnnyh6

The link you have provided is from 2013 and it is no longer offered, however you may download the U-Verse app  which will allow you to turn your device into a remote and there is also a favorites option which will allow you to create a favorites list.

As the previous agent stated you may also purchase any universal remote that is compatible with U-Verse service.

Let us know if you have additional questions.
