It was at my boss’s houses. Everything was fine but when you turn tv on you had to go to input to get direct tv. I tried to reset remote from rf to ir and then got the message. I brought remotes home and set one for Ed and one for ir. Gonna try both again. Yes I reset the genie receiver
Thanks for the info @mickel2. We need more details to check this out. Can you please share the model numbers of his remote and receiver? Rizza, DIRECTV Community Team
The 1st generation Genie (HR34) and 1st generation Mini Genie (C31) they use the old RC6X series (white universal) that is IR. Models after those two use the RC7X series (Genie or "peanut" style) that is IR and RF. The exception would the the Gemini/Osprey (C71KW) as that uses the RC8X because of the unique capabilities.
The Mini Genie (Client, not receiver as no tuners of its own) gets most of its information from the main Genie. So if you're having trouble with it, even pairing with the remote, suggested to red button reset the main Genie and when complete then do the Mini so you've verified no communication issues. Verify coax finger tight to both before doing the reset.
Is it just the remote pairing issue, as well as the TV defaulting to a different input from DirecTV (which would be a TV setting), or are there other issues?
I had the remote working fine but when I turn the tv on it wouldn’t go directly to direct tv. It went to Home Screen of brand new lg tv. That’s when I went to remote programming screen again and hit the RF/IR setting. That’s when I got the error and neither remote would clear it. I reset the genie and it went to a “sports score” screen that I couldn’t get to clear then I had to leave.
Want to find out what model is the box you're using and might need to see if the TV has any software/firmware updates. Also if TV has it, you can try turning HDMI-CEC off as that is where the two try to automatically do things (such as switching to the active input), but doesn't always work well with DirecTV boxes (especially if connected to a 'smart' power strip.).
@Juniper is right. We must identify the box model, as the Genie Remote (RC71, RC71B, RC72, or RC73) only works in RF mode with HR44, C41, and C41W. For further assistance, please have her contact us at: DIRECTV Customer Service - Phone Support & Chat. Rizza, DIRECTV Community Team

I’m not at her house but do you I know the receiver (mini genie) is at least 10 years old. Do you think maybe it can’t accept am RF frequency remote?

Ok so RC (Remote Control) 73 and 72.

The RC6XR will control the HR34/C31 in RF.
