Genie 2 Replacement

After 6 years, Genie 2 starting to give problems (aborted recordings, occasional pixelation, etc.  Dish reception is very good via test.  I can pick one up on eBay pretty cheap.  I have no problems with installation knowledge.  Any precautions I should take, is this a good idea?

Thank you.

The Genie-2, like other DirecTV boxes is 'leased'. This means it is DirecTV owned and cannot be transferred customer to customer. Those on eBay are either that customer didn't understand they had to return (and so will end up with a non-return fee) or is stolen.

If the box needs replacing, you call DirecTV. It is $19.95 delivery for a warranty replacement (or covered if you are paying for the Equipment Protection Plan).

Absolutely go with what @Juniper said.

I've never had satellite TV service, but I vaguely remember some customers being allowed to own their equipment.

In fact, it appears to be true...but that changed approximately 20 years ago.

I highly doubt any such equipment which was legally owned would work today. If it did, I'd expect bare-minimum service, almost no HD capabilities and absolutely no possibility of anything in 4K.

Example: Someone I know recently replaced a very old cable box. As a result, he got a lot more channels he was paying for, but not actually able to watch.

@baseballisback

The original Genie (HR34) and Mini Genie (C31), which came out in 2012, were the first to be lease-only. Shortly after their launch, DirecTV discontinued purchased to own for all other models.

A little over 20 years ago is when the lease options were added alongside purchase to own.
